Founded by the Boston Typographical Union during a printer’s strike, the pro-worker newspaper is published from offices at 243 Washington Street (then 91 Washington Street). It is reputed to be the only labor newspaper that advocated including freed slaves into the ranks of organized labor. The paper campaigns for the eight-hour day as well as labor schools, reading rooms, and libraries for workers of all, without regard to sex, complexion or birthplace.” Its last issue appears on October 16, 1867.
